Intent- the influence of visual language and device on narrative
Content - a narrative situation informed by own sketchbook observational notes
After watching a part of Hitchcock's North by Northwest I was able to analyse the elements in it that made me feel a sense of tension and anticipation. The surroundings of the scene were quite bare with distant happenings making the viewer curious. An isolated figure is always present with the appearance of a second brief encounter with another, again furthering the suspense. Cars keep driving by and as a viewer I expected something to happen each time. Our patience is tested with the amount of times this happens and finally a plane in the distance attacks the isolated figure reaching the climax of the scene. I have tried to convey this sense of anticipation and suspense in a short illustration. I used perspective and composition to try and achieve this. I would make this piece longer still to try and further the anticipation. I enjoyed using perspective and composition to achieve the desired effect and want to further this exploration in other work. I am considering using these techniques as part my exploration in my FMP work.
